I’ve Learnt to Pay Attention

What Actually Happens During an Energy Healing Session?

After more than thirty years of doing Energy Healing, the way I work has become very much my own. But I still can’t tell you exactly how it works.

If you'd asked me thirty years ago what I thought Healing was, I suspect I'd have given you a much more definite answer than I would now.

Back then I was fascinated by the idea that you could put your hands on somebody and something might happen. Proper Healing. The sort of stories where somebody was ill, somebody put their hands on them and they got better.

I loved all of that.

More than thirty years later, I'm still doing Energy Healing, but the way I work now is very much my own. It's developed over years of training, experimenting, noticing what works for me and, probably most importantly, learning to trust what I'm noticing rather than trying to follow a rigid formula.

And no, after all that time I still can't give you a scientific explanation for exactly what is happening. 😂

But I can tell you what it's like from my side of the room.

What am I actually doing?

Before I begin Healing, I set an intention for the Healing to work where it's needed, and I ask my guides and helpers to come in and work with me.

Now, obviously, that last sentence depends very much on what you believe. I can't prove to you that guides have arrived because I've asked them to. It's simply part of how I've worked for a very long time and how I personally understand what I'm doing.

Then I start paying attention.

There are places around the body that I can find myself repeatedly drawn to. Sometimes I'll notice a change in sensation in my hands or my own body as I'm working. Occasionally I might pick up something that feels like dizziness, anxiety or discomfort. I also have a very particular yawn and body shiver that I've come to recognise over the years as a sign for me to pay attention to an area.

That probably sounds slightly bonkers written down. 😂 But after doing this for more than thirty years, I've learnt not to ignore it simply because I can't explain it neatly.

I might also use things such as a pendulum, tuning forks, crystals or colour during a session. I don't decide beforehand that everybody is going to get exactly the same thing in exactly the same order. I use what feels appropriate for the person I'm working with and what I'm noticing as the session unfolds.

That's probably the biggest difference between how I think about Healing now and how I thought about it when I was younger.

I'm not following a script.

Healing isn't something I do to you

I think this is important.

I don't look at somebody lying there and think, Right, I've found the problem. I'll fix that.

Apart from anything else, I don't believe it's my place to make that sort of claim. Someone may come to me with something very specific going on, but they may equally say, I don't really know what I need. I just fancied coming.

That's absolutely fine. I don't need somebody to arrive with the correct explanation for how they're feeling before I can work with them. We talk, I listen, and then during the Healing I pay attention to what I notice.

Sometimes that means I'm drawn somewhere the client has already mentioned. Sometimes I notice something I wasn't expecting. Sometimes the session simply feels very quiet.

I don't need to manufacture something interesting just so I've got something impressive to tell them afterwards.

That matters to me more now than it probably did thirty years ago.

I've made it my own

Over the years I've learnt different things, tried different things and kept what genuinely belongs in the way I work.

Reiki is part of it. So are intuition, sound, crystals and colour when they feel appropriate. My spiritual beliefs are part of it too.

But I wouldn't say there is one correct way everybody should do Energy Healing, and I certainly wouldn't claim my way is it.

It's simply become my way.

There's something rather lovely about that after all these years. I started out wanting to learn how Healing worked. Somewhere along the way I stopped needing somebody else to give me a perfect set of instructions and became much more interested in paying attention.

I still question things. I still read, learn and experiment. I'll probably still be trying new things when I'm ninety if anybody lets me loose with a tuning fork. 😂

But I trust myself more than I did when I started.

And what happens afterwards?

When I feel the Healing work is finished, I close that part of the session and we have a breather before I do a Tarot reading.

For me, the Tarot fits naturally at the end. It can bring together some of what has come up during the session and give us another way of looking at what might need attention afterwards.

Again, I don't see the cards as an infallible instruction manual telling somebody what is going to happen to them. They're another part of the conversation.

And perhaps that's what my Healing has gradually become too.

Not me claiming to know exactly what's wrong with you. Not a fixed routine that I perform identically on everybody. And definitely not a promise that I can cure something medicine can't.

It's an hour of paying attention. To what you're telling me. To what I'm noticing. To what seems to be happening during the Healing. And, yes, to some things I still can't explain.

After thirty years, I'm surprisingly comfortable with that.

Something to try

You don't need to know anything about Energy Healing to experiment with paying attention to what you notice.

The next time you walk into a room, meet somebody, pick up an object or find yourself repeatedly noticing something, resist the urge to explain it immediately.

Just notice.

What happened in your body? Where did your attention go? Did something change when you moved closer or further away? Did you dismiss a feeling before you'd even really registered it?

None of that proves you've detected an energy field, received intuitive guidance or heard from your guides. There may be a completely ordinary explanation.

But noticing comes before explaining.

And after more than thirty years of doing this, I think I've become much better at allowing myself to do the first without always needing to rush into the second.
