At the base of your skull are a few tiny muscles called the sub occipitals that are constantly dancing with your eye movements.


Every time your eyes dart or scan the world for threat, these little muscles tighten to keep your head steady.


And when they stay tight for too long, your body gets the message: stay alert, stay on guard. But when your eyes soften and your head balances freely again, your body hears a new message: you’re safe now.

🌸 A gentle reset: The Eye–Neck Melt

You can try this right now. It takes less than two minutes.


1️⃣ Find the spot

Slide your fingertips up the back of your neck until you feel the bony ridge at the base of your skull. Just beneath that ridge, on either side of your spine, there’s a small soft area - those are your sub occipital muscles.


2️⃣ Eyes first

Keep your head still. Slowly move your eyes to the right, then centre.. to the left, then centre. Notice the tiny movement under your fingertips - that’s those muscles responding to your gaze.


3️⃣ Breathe

Inhale through your nose, exhale with a soft sigh. Whisper to yourself: “It’s safe to see.” “It’s safe to rest.”


4️⃣ Release

Let your hands fall. Notice how your neck feels longer, your eyes softer, your mind quieter. This tiny exercise tells your nervous system we’re okay. Your eyes and spine share the same reflex pathway - what you see, your body feels!

Something magical happens when your body truly believes it’s safe.


It starts small - your jaw loosens mid-conversation, your breath deepens, your shoulders drop. That’s your system learning to trust calm again.
