What If You Don’t Know What You Want Yet?

How to use a pendulum when you’re not sure what you want
My cards have been telling me for a little while that something is changing.
It would be helpful if they’d elaborate, obviously. 😂 But so far I seem to be getting the spiritual equivalent of something’s coming, watch this space.
The thing is, I feel it too. I’ve found myself looking at different opportunities and thinking about changing things up a bit, without having a clear picture of what I actually want that change to look like.
So, with the Autumn Equinox coming up, I’ve decided to get my pendulum out and try a little experiment.
Rather than asking it what’s going to happen next, I want to explore two things: what am I ready to put more energy towards, and is there anything I need to acknowledge or let go of first?
And I thought you might like to try it with me.
I’ve always loved autumn. There’s something about that first change in the air, when you suddenly notice the evenings drawing in and summer beginning to disappear. But I don’t really see it as everything winding down. We’ve still got more than three months of the year left, and an awful lot can happen in three months.
Perhaps it’s a good time to put a few things in place. To follow an opportunity that interests you, start something you’ve been putting off, make a decision, or put something out into the universe that you’d quite like to see happen.
The only problem is that sometimes we don’t know exactly what we want.
That’s where I am at the moment. I know I’m open to change. I’m looking at opportunities, following the things that interest me and seeing what comes back, but I don’t have a carefully worked-out picture of where it all leads.
Thirty years ago I probably would have wanted one. 😂
Now I’m much more comfortable with the possibility that I might not have thought of the best answer yet.
There’s something quite exciting about that. I can still do my bit — because I don’t think telling the universe you’d like something lovely to happen and then sitting on the sofa waiting counts 😂 — but I can also leave a bit of room for the unexpected.
And that’s what got me thinking about my pendulum.
I’ve used pendulums on and off for years, including in Healing and energy work. I’m not going to pretend I can tell you exactly why they move. There are perfectly ordinary explanations involving tiny unconscious movements of the hand, and there are people who use them as a way of working with intuition or energy.
You probably know by now that I’m quite happy not having to choose a side before I’m allowed to be curious.
What interests me is what happens when I use one.
Something to try this week
If you already have a pendulum, dig it out. If you haven’t, you can experiment with something as simple as a ring hanging from a piece of thread or a fine chain.
Hold it still and ask it to show you a yes. Then ask it to show you a no. You might find one swings backwards and forwards and the other from side to side, or you might get circles. Don’t worry about what it’s supposed to do. See what yours does.
Then I’d keep the questions simple.
Ask whether there’s something in your life at the moment that needs acknowledging before you move forward. If you get a yes, sit with that for a minute and see what comes to mind.
Then ask whether there’s anything you’re ready to stop giving quite so much energy to.
And finally, ask whether you’re ready to welcome something new before the end of this year.
What I find interesting with things like this isn’t only which way the pendulum swings. It’s what happens in me while I’m waiting for it to answer.
Perhaps a person immediately pops into my head. Or I know exactly what I hope the answer will be.
Maybe I feel relieved when it says yes, or slightly irritated when it doesn’t. 😂 That reaction tells me something too.
And if pendulums aren’t your thing, you could ask yourself the same questions without one. Write them down, pull a Tarot or oracle card if you use them, or simply sit quietly for a few minutes and see what comes up.
I’m going to do the experiment properly myself over the Equinox, because I’m curious to see what mine has to say.
Not because I expect it to tell me what’s coming.
I think I’m happier leaving that bit open.
There are still more than three months left before the end of this year. I can put some things in motion, put some energy behind the things I’d like more of, follow the opportunities that appear and leave a little space for something I haven’t thought of yet.
Who knows what might turn up? I’ll let you know what happens. ❤️
with love
